Coffee, chocolate and … avocado?!? Check out this wicked awesome way to switch up your morning coffee routine. We take your joe and make it your breakfast too. Say hello to the caffeinated morning smoothie.

  • 1/4 cup dates, pitted
  • 5 Tbsp coarse-ground coffee
  • 1 3/4 cups (415 ml) boiling water
  • 1 avocado, pitted and peeled
  • 1 oz (28 g) vegan dark chocolate bar, plus some for garnish
  • 12 small green serrano chili peppers, chopped (optional)
  • Fresh mint leaves, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Soak the dates overnight in warm water to cover.
  2. The next morning, make some french press coffee with the ground coffee and boiling water (add coffee then boiling water to French press, wait 4-5 minutes, then plunge). Or just use any extra-strong brewed coffee.
  3. Pit and peel the avo then put the flesh in a high-speed blender. Add the chocolate and serrano (if using). Drain the dates, then add them too.
  4. Pour half the brewed coffee into the blender, and get blending on low speed. Gradually increase speed and with the blender running, add the remaining coffee, blending until everything is smooth and creamy.
  5. Pour into two glasses (wine glasses are nice).
  6. Using a microplane rasp, grate some chocolate over the top. Garnish with fresh mint leaves.
